January 20, 2019 - Sunday evening
-3 degrees/clear skies/full moon
Pentoga Road
It sure feels good to sit under a blanket tonight, snuggled in, my only responsibility to throw an occasional log on the fire. The mercury didn't rise far above zero today and the following just flashed onto my computer screen.
We haven't experienced thirty below zero in several years, but it could certainly happen before morning. Oh well, when in Rome, or on Pentoga Road, throw another log on the fire.
Today began in the shop where I tried working on the mother/child intarsia piece. Though the wood furnace had been running for over half an hour, it was still too cold to work with any kind of accuracy. In fact, it's difficult to do anything while blowing on and rubbing my hands together every few seconds. Consequently, I brought everything inside and worked at the dining room table.
I enjoyed my first excursion into the combination of scroll sawing and carving. It certainly isn't boring.
Finished, I moved out to the now-heated shop and sawed apart two more pallets. With the temperature well below zero, I carried them in one at a time.
The lumber from the disassembled pallets is beginning to add up. One of tomorrow's projects is to find a place elsewhere to stack the boards. I'm running out of room in the shop.
The very best of smells greeted me when I walked in the door. Sargie had been busy making my favorite breakfast, bacon, eggs, fried potatoes, fresh mushrooms, toast, and milk.
Sargie and I took our afternoon drive around the area. Though the sun was out and it looked warm, getting out of the car was, at times, almost brutal.
We saw several deer yarded up under a canopy of spruce trees. All were lying down conserving their body heat. |
It's time to close. I should head out to the kitchen and pack Sargie's lunch for tomorrow, but I hate to leave the heat of the living room.
No one said life was always going to be easy.
After all, a man's work is never done.
So are the tales from Pentoga Road...
