Sargie's making goodies for Sunday's gathering |
64 degrees/cloudy/calm winds
Pentoga Road
Wouldn't you know, Carl the Weatherman lied again. Originally, he claimed today would be the nicest day of several over the Labor Day weekend. A message just flashed across my screen saying there's a 90% chance of storms beginning around 1 PM, just when everyone is due to arrive for the annual Mighty Milligan Labor Day Celebration.
Saturday was a work day on Pentoga Road. I did everything from run the lawn sweeper over the yard to working in the garden and later, manning the vacuum, broom, and dust rag.
The asparagus fronds had completely taken over the front part of the garden, so using the two wheeled trimmer, I cut and hauled those away.
The same thing was done a year ago and we enjoyed a nice late fall cutting of asparagus with no apparent harm to the plants.
I moved my attentions to painting the porch handrails. Each had been given only one coat when built this summer and another was needed.
Sargie had earlier insisted that a drop cloth should be used and reminded me that I had a tendency to dribble paint.
There are times when a guy is better off doing what he's told and honestly, she might have had a point.
I'm glad I did.
Since the paint is oil based, it would have stained the steps regardless of how hard I scrubbed.
The rest of the day was spent getting ready for today's gathering. Sargie felt badly that she had to work and I didn't want her staying up all night cleaning or doing other chores, so I was doubly motivated to get everything done.
I think I did as much as possible.
I'm not sure when Sargie came to bed last night. She started working as soon as she walked in the door from the Vision Center, putting her touches on the preparations. |
I need to move along and get to the barn. With rain in the forecast, we may need some additional room out of the weather for people to gather and visit. I'm simply going to clear the middle to make room for a few lawn chairs. It won't be pretty but should be effective.
The ten pound pork loin will be put on the smoker around 10:00 this morning and should be finished sometime this afternoon. Hamburgers and brats will go on the grill when we're ready. Add all the other goodies and we'll feast like royalty.
Rain or shine, it looks to be a busy morning and a fun day ahead.
After all, a man's work is never done.
So are the tales from Pentoga Road...
I may have slopped on the drop cloth, but at least the hand rail is pretty! |
