Pentoga Road

Stefanie and Robb, back from Lebanon where they are teachers, are ending their summer vacation in the US and will soon be heading back to the Mideast.

Stef and her brother, Andrew, were my students throughout their public school years in northern Maine. I taught with their parents, Bert and Eileen. Good folks. The best!

Friday began with the usual five mile walk. With all the rain that's fallen, everything seems to be in a hurry to bloom and/or grow. There's little doubt the plants know there're only a few weeks left in the growing season.

It's hard to keep a good heart rate going when there are handfuls of raspberries growing along the road.

I find myself stopping every now and then to gather a fistful before continuing on, then stopping again. The cycle continues for the entire hike.

Back home, almost a gallon of blueberries were plucked from the bushes.

We're having a good late push of berries. Those I picked yesterday will be frozen for this coming winter.

Not to be outdone, the banana winter squash are doubling in size every few days. This particular variety grows to over forty pounds and stores well, hopefully into next spring.

Winter squash is our go-to winter vegetable of choice, often replacing potatoes in our diet.

Out of the garden and into the yard, some equipment had to be rearranged in the storage container to get to the lawn sweeper. Due to the heavy, wet, growth, clumps of grass were left in the yard after Sargie was finished mowing last Thursday.

Doesn't everyone have a matching mower and lawn rake?
It didn't take long to zoom over the lawn and make it look spiffy.

I used the two wheel trimmer around the storage container. The trail in back of the container has been largely ignored this summer, mostly due to other priorities. Not any more.

I also groomed the trail from the barn to the container through the woods.

Needing to take an afternoon break, I retired to the house and enjoyed a turkey sandwich, paid a few bills, and oh yeah, closed my eyes for half an hour.

The rest of the day was spent in the shop working on a stickman rock band. For whatever reason, I enjoy making the silly things.

Sargie was home early and we feasted on fresh cauliflower, kohlrabi, and grilled hamburgers. Neither of us had any difficulty falling asleep last night.

Sargie closes the Vision Center today. Assuming it's not raining, I'll go for my walk. There are ten pounds of hamburger I need to package and freeze today, blueberries to bag, and a stickman rock band to complete.

After all, the show must go on.

So are the tales from Pentoga Road...
