It's crappie season in the Upper Peninsula

September 20, 2020 - Sunday evening
63 degrees/partly cloudy/windy
Pentoga Road

I'm writing tonight as we'll be up bright and early Monday morning for our monthly household shopping trip to Green Bay.

I was out of the house first thing this morning and headed for the lake.

The lake was smooth as glass when I launched the boat

It seemed strange to be going solo without my favorite fishing partner. On a very chilly morning, the Crappie Queen was still sound asleep in our bedroom, snuggled deep under a pile of warm covers.

Jambo, my favorite guy fishing partner, had given me the heads up a few days ago that fishing had entered its fall phase and the fish were hungry. With all the rain this past summer along with working on multiple projects, we've had little opportunity to go fishing.

The colors along the lake made my time on the water especially enjoyable. Seems I saw a new picture everywhere I looked.

I found the crappies right where Jambo said they'd be. I missed the first strike, but managed to land the rest.

Amid all the crappies, I caught a red ear sunfish. It's pretty obvious why it's called a red ear.

It was mid morning before I returned back to the boat landing with a dozen slab-sized crappies in my basket.

After processing another batch of apples for the dehydrator, Sargie and I left for our afternoon drive, pausing often to snap pictures.

We drove by the following sign and were tempted to crash Lisa's Bachelorette party.

Since we have no idea who Lisa is, we laughed and drove on.

Oh oh... someone's about to lose their electricity.

We arrived home later in the afternoon. I went for my daily walk while Sargie did her thing.

I spent time working on a couple of fishing reels. With crappie season upon us, both Sargie's and mine are cleaned, greased, lined, and ready to go.

My favorite crappie reel is a closed face ultra light with four pound test line.

The car will be heading south to Green Bay Monday morning. No doubt, we'll be making the rounds of all the usual stores and hopefully arrive home by late afternoon.

After all, a man's work is never done.

So are the tales from Pentoga Road...
