Neighbor Mike - "Jambo"

September 17, 2018 - Monday evening
59 degrees/cloudy/breezy
Pentoga Road

Today's been a good one. Jambo and I began at daylight and soon found ourselves trying to fish in a stiff breeze on a choppy lake.

It was tough holding the boat. We'd arrive at a prime fishing hole and by the time our lines got wet, the wind had whisked us over and beyond.

None-the-less, we put several nice crappies in the fish basket, enough to make a meal.

The geese are beginning to migrate and a large flock landed on the lake just after sunrise. Beautiful, absolutely beautiful.

Mike and I were back home by mid morning. Sargie was doing her thing, so I made my way to the shop where I began work on a maple goblet that will, hopefully, have two rings around the stem.

After a summer hiatus, it felt good to be working at the lathe again.
It took some time to sharpen the chisels. One of my many weaknesses at the lathe is putting a fine cutting edge on each blade.

For whatever reason, luck mostly, the wood began peeling off in long shavings, the sign of a well sharpened tool.

I continued working on the hard maple. Dang, it felt good. I wish I could duplicate the sharpening again, but as I said, it was more luck than skill.

Sargie had an afternoon appointment in Iron Mountain. We rode together and I ran a few errands around town while waiting for her.

We took a rural road back home from Iron Mountain.
This evening's been a quiet one. Sargie opens the Vision Center tomorrow. I'm going to work on the goblet, begin cleaning the outdoor wood furnace, and no doubt, think a few deep thoughts.

After all, a man's work is never done.

So are the tales from Pentoga Road...

Much cooler temperatures and rain are in the forecast. Flocks of migrating geese flying south were overhead much of the day.
