39 degrees/fog/calm winds
Pentoga Road
Despite being blown over on their sides and stems partially broken from the strong winds ten days ago, the Cosmos flowers are beautiful. Seems the flowers always appear at their best just before heavy frost sets in.
We're presently experiencing a string of cookie cutter days with each one identical to the other. All are sunny, pleasantly warm, and dry. We'll take them.
Andy sent a few pictures yesterday. At age two, my granddaughter Ivy is already a heartbreaker and Grandpa can hardly wait to get out to the East Coast next month to play with her.
Unfortunately, in the action department, Sunday was also a cookie cutter day. Sargie worked at the Vision Center from noon until five. I kept myself occupied by hobbling from one chair to the other and eventually landed in the shop.
I worked with the lathe for a bit, mostly experimenting with different methods of offset turning. Trying to concentrate on turning a piece of wood while standing, balancing, and wearing a walking cast, is similar to rubbing one's belly while patting his head.
Growing frustrated, I moved to the scroll saw and began cutting out stick people. Yesterday's work was of a mama who's ready to pull her hair out because her child is continually sitting in front of a computer.

Mama especially "spoke" to me. Her actions best represent my current mood.
I was running a short piece of hickory through the joiner yesterday when it hit a knot and bucked back, slamming into my right thumb. I don't think it's broken, but it's sure swollen and hurts. Seems strange that I can go years without an injury or boo boo of any type and suddenly, they seem to be popping up all over my body.
It was too nice of a day to be inside. With blue smoke rising from both ears, I climbed onto the riding mower and cut the yard and alongside the road.
Look what was there to greet me. Suddenly, there are deer everywhere.
Later, while feeding the goldfish, I noticed something growing in the asparagus patch. You may remember that I'd cut the fronds a couple of weeks ago.
Sure enough, we'll enjoy fresh asparagus this fall! I noticed the late cutting is much smaller, but at this time of year, any asparagus is better than none!
Last evening was spent watching the Packers eek out a victory over the visiting Chicago Bears. The first half was one of the lousiest displays of Packers football I've ever witnessed. The second half was one of the best.
I didn't watch alone. My buddy, John, was in Boise, Idaho, watching, and of course, Yooper Brother Mark was parked in front of their television. I was texting with both throughout the entire game. In the end, John, Mark, and I, did a pretty good job of coaching. The Packers won.
Sargie opens the Vision Center this morning. I think I'm going to head to town and visit a couple of the thrift stores to see if I can find some sort of inexpensive exercise machine, one that I can set up in the shop or barn until I regain full use of my left foot. This business of sitting around all day is driving me crazy. Sargie tells me I don't have far to go. At this point, I'd have to agree with her.
After all, a man's work is never done.
So are the tales from Pentoga Road...
Taken late Sunday afternoon. Suddenly, there are deer everywhere I look. |
