Sargie at Horse Race Rapids Sunday afternoon
September 10, 2017 - Monday
47 degrees/clear skies/calm winds
Pentoga Road

We couldn't have ordered two more perfect days than we had this past weekend. According to the forecast, the weather this coming week is to be even warmer with no rain mentioned. Life doesn't get any better.

Sunday morning began in the shop. For whatever reason, I'm into cleaning and rearranging my favorite workplace. Why, I'm not certain, but as the saying goes, never look a clean shop in the mouth.

Some power tools, those I seldom use and what few I have duplicates of, will be moved to a set of shelves in the barn. Other goodies, things that are rarely needed, but too valuable to throw away, will find a new home in the storage container.

I spent a bit of time in the garden later in the morning.

Other than the Auntie Hollyhocks, sunflowers, and cosmos, it's looking pretty sad. The freezing temperatures of the past several nights have taken their toll.

With the heavy foliage dying, I'm finding squash and pumpkins that have been hidden under the leaves. Many are still immature and I'm not certain if they will harden off or simply rot.

This is a Jack Be Little (table top) pumpkin that crossed last year with something else, a Chinese variety winter squash I think. Weighing several pounds, it's turned into a beautiful pumpkin.
One of our favorite sunflowers, the Teddy Bear, is finally blooming. It was iffy as to whether we'd even see a bloom this summer.

The original seed washed out in June's flood and it was early July before those that were replanted even sprouted.

Sargie and I enjoyed an early ride Sunday afternoon so we'd be home before the Packers/Seahawks football game.

Our final destination was Horse Race Rapids, a Class II and III section of the Paint River that can be wild and wooly.

The river is reached via a beautiful path with a goodly number of steps. Though not dangerous, a person doesn't want to get too careless. A local woman died when she fell over the edge of the cliff several years ago.

Once at the bottom, we walked to the foot of the rapids and were able to enjoy the rushing water.

When we return later this fall wearing athletic shoes (and not sandals), we'll climb over some large boulders further upstream so Sargie can see the main rapids.

I found the following video that is excellent and gives a kayaker's first hand view of the rapids. It's a fun one to watch.

We arrived home before the Packers game where I was happy to help coach the boys in Green and Gold to victory over Seattle. It was a good day in Packer Nation.

Sargie and I spent some time last night in the garden, feeding the goldfish and changing the filters on the pumps.

It's getting late enough in the summer that we'll soon have to decide how best to overwinter the goldfish. Part of me wants to find a large aquarium, at least a hundred gallons, and set it up in the dining room so we can enjoy the fish throughout the winter. The more practical side says to simply buy a large wash tub, hang a light above it, and let them swim the winter away down the basement.

Also, there are so many plants that we'd like to overwinter. We generally keep them in the basement under grow lights, but I'm wondering where we will find the room. Some of Sargie's spike plants are several years old, four feet tall, and almost as big around.

Maybe we'll win the lottery or Publisher's Clearing House Sweepstakes and be able to build a Florida room onto the south side of the house, a tropical paradise for both fish and plants.

Sargie closes the Vision Center tonight and won't be home until late. I'm going to spray the exterior of the house for cluster flies today. There's an annual infestation that happens every fall and left untreated, they find their way into the house. I'll also set off a couple of bug bombs inside to kill any critters that have already made themselves at home.

Other than that, it's back to the shop to continue cleaning, sorting, throwing and putting away goodies. About the time I think that I'm almost finished, more is found to sort through. Maybe today's the day.

Time to get busy and make hay while the sun shines.

After all, a man's work is never done.

So are the tales from Pentoga Road...
