June 20, 2016 - Monday
70 degrees/clear/very windy
Pentoga Road

A storm blew through last night dropping two-tenths of an inch of rain, but thankfully, removing the high heat and humidity of the past two days. This morning is absolutely gorgeous, a perfect temperature with dry air.

Father's Day/my birthday was the best. I heard from all four sons and had great conversations with each. Josh called and we talked for a quite a while. Luke called last night and had just gotten home from Abigail's all-day softball tournament. I had a wonderful video conference with Matt and his family, and Andy called, via satellite phone, from somewhere aboard a ship in the Gulf of Alaska on his way to Dutch Harbor in the Aleutians.

It was so hot yesterday that other than weeding in the morning and fertilizing and watering last night, I spent most the day inside. Mom and I took an early-morning walk around the yard and I showed her the other arch that is about ready to be installed on the garden arbor.

I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever find the time to get it all done, but I will, oh yes, by all that is holy, it will be completed before summer's end.

Sargie gave me some wonderful presents for my birthday and says the "main present" has yet to arrive. I really liked the two spare extra large batteries she gave me for my Dewalt cordless power tools, last year's presents from Sargie. She also included a few more accessories for which I'm really grateful.

Mom is giving me a digital/talking tape measure. It will be nice to not ruin so much lumber by misreading a conventional tape measure.

Our usual afternoon drive was made to town. We did a bit of shopping then took a short drive around the area's lakes while sipping Cokes and talking a mile a minute.

We enjoyed my favorites, steaks from the grill, sweet corn, cottage cheese, and baked potatoes for supper.

Sargie had earlier worked her kitchen magic by baking the best carrot cake in the whole wide world, loaded with freshly grated carrots, raisins, and lots of coconut, for my birthday cake.

The strawberry on top was my walk-by contribution
With the sun setting, we spent last evening in the yard. Brutus had a sudden burst of energy and was up for a game of fetch.

Not to be denied, Mom got in on the action.

We spent last evening on the deck and talked until the bugs ran us inside. It was a nice, old-fashioned, evening, reminiscent of the days when everyone sat outside on warm summer evenings.

With dark setting in, I was serenaded by a two-girl chorus and after, enjoyed ice cream and cake, the end to a perfect day.

Page Eight:

I'm not sure what's on the agenda for today. The last of the top soil/compost needs to be emptied from the trailer and spread on the potatoes growing in the fifteen-gallon cloth pots. There's also wood to be worked up from the piles and the front bins filled. Then there's the lattice to put up on the barn for the cherry tomatoes to climb and of course, the arbor to work on.

Sargie's off until Wednesday, so I'll let her and Mom fill the agenda.

I thought that cake was at least one spoonful shy of being complete. Now I know where it went.
Until then, just remember that a man's work is never done.

So are the tales from Pentoga Road...
