Pentoga Road
Happy Father's Day to all the dads everywhere. I hope you are spoiled beyond rotten today, your children wait on you hand and foot, and your belly stays full with all your favorite foods. Failing all of that, maybe you'll get to take a nap.
We arrived home around 10:30 Friday evening meaning we drove around a thousand miles in twenty four hours. Mom was waiting for us when we arrived in Terre Haute at noon and wasted no time in loading her luggage and retracing the miles north.
Road construction was everywhere, but we made decent time.
I drove the open stretches of interstate during the daylight hours before Sargie took over in Janesville, Wisconsin, and took us on home.
The geography in Illinois is flat with corn and bean fields as far as the eye can see. |
We'd been gone just a bit over one day, but it seemed like a week as we pulled into the drive. Home Sweet Home... nothing like it.
Saturday dawned very hot and humid. Mom and I spent some quality time together as we drove to pick up Brutus from the kennel. He was so excited to get into the Blazer that he barely noticed Mom or me. Worry not, he found both of us later in the day and it was back to Brutus as usual.
The high on Saturday reached into the upper 80's. It took little convincing for Brutus to go swimming. Given a choice, he'd still be at the lake retrieving the ball.
Yooper Brother Mark sent a few pictures of their vacation in Wisconsin Dells. He and Sheri are taking advantage of the occasion to spoil Isabella a bit.
Hmm, who's having more fun, Isabella or Grandma? |
Great niece, Piper, came home from the hospital on Friday. I heard she brought her mommy, Ashley, with. Everything seems to be going well with both and we're looking forward to seeing them at the upcoming Mighty Milligan Fourth of July Celebration.
Hot? Lord, it's hot! The temperatures are forecast to reach ninety today. Knowing that, we installed the air conditioners on Saturday afternoon, a small one in our bedroom, the larger one downstairs.
Working together, they keep our home comfortably cool, even on the warmest of days.
I spent some time in the garden Saturday afternoon. It seems I might have overbred the giant sunflower strain I've been working with the past several years. The top on one is already too heavy causing me to pound a stake to support the flower.
The giant pumpkins are FINALLY beginning to grow. There are no blossoms yet and I wonder how anything will grow to a giant size in so short of time, but I'm pushing both plants with heavy doses (two gallons each) of liquid fertilizer a day. We need some warm, sunny, days, lots of them, over the next two months.
The plants are ugly with holes caused by insects, but they're growing inches a day now. |
I was met in the garden by a mini hoppy toad who wasn't mad at anyone. Lifting a leaf of a cabbage plant, the toad jumped right onto my hand.
We enjoyed a truly summer-type meal for supper last night. The last asparagus of the year was eaten along with the end of the radishes. The final zucchini pickle processed last year was also consumed. Thankfully, we should begin making this year's crop in another month or two.
Of course, no summer meal would be complete without brat patties (or conventional brat sausages.)
So, it's Father's Day and also my birthday. I'm not sure what's on the agenda, but it won't be too strenuous. Steaks are on the menu for a special meal and Sargie's planning on baking a cake.
I generally use (what I feel) are the best pictures to start the blog or at the very end. In this case, I left the best for last. You'll see why.
It's time to begin the day. I've already talked with Matt, Jessica, and Emerson, via Facetime. Breakfast is eaten and it's time to do something, even if it is being lazy.
After all, a man's work is never done.
So are the tales from Pentoga Road...
Six months old. Ivy has a way of making her grandpa smile. |
