Granddaughter Ivy is wishing everyone a Happy Valentine's Day |
35 degrees/partly cloudy/calm winds
Horn Lake, Mississippi
It appears as though it's going to be a beautiful day, at least in northern Mississippi. Yooper Brother Mark sent a text this morning saying the thermometer was registering -27 at his house. That makes the current 35 degrees seem downright warm, almost hot. We'll take it.
Love the name... Paw Paw, Illinois. As in, "Pickin' up paw paws, puttin' em in your pocket... way down yonder in the paw paw patch." |
There are giant windmills dotting the landscape all around central Illinois. |
Sargie and I had a ball yesterday. We left Janesville, Wisconsin, at 8:30 and pulled into Horn Lake, south of Memphis, at 5:30. Hmm, nine hours on the road, 630 miles traveled, averaging 69 miles per hour, including stops.
The least expensive gas found was in Oglesby, Illinois. Seems the average for the entire trip has been running around $1.45 a gallon. |
We were lucky. Traffic was extremely light and the weather perfect.
A huge cross alongside the interstate in Carbondale, Illinois |
Since we had ideal conditions and it was daylight, I drove the entire way. I don't get to do that much any more, so it was a treat for me.

Every restaurant in the area was filled with Valentine's Day revelers last night so we ordered a pizza to be delivered to the room. After filling our stomachs, it didn't take long for either of us to fall off to sleep.
I sneaked out for breakfast this morning, complimentary here at the hotel. We don't get continental breakfasts like this up home. My plate was piled high with cheesy eggs, grits, biscuits smothered in sausage gravy, and a bit of fruit to round out the food groups. I brought Sargie a plate of fruit with a Danish back to the room.
We'll be taking off here shortly and making our way to Laurel and expect to arrive by mid afternoon. First, I need to finish this, pack the car, and get things ready to roll.
After all, a man's work is never done.
So are the tales from Pentoga Road by way of Horn Lake, Mississippi.
Sargie's not quite as ready to go as I am |
