Wednesday was Potato Day on Pentoga Road
May 6, 2015 - Wednesday evening
59 degrees/partly cloudy/breezy
Pentoga Road

I'm feeling pretty sassy right now. No, check that, I'm feeling sassy, perky, spunky, and saucy. Oh yes, I'm definitely feeling saucy. I just uploaded this summer's class online. Let the term begin! I'm ready to teach.

I started Wednesday by going fishing. The temperature was in the low 40's with no wind. Though fishing was slow, I used the opportunity to check out the boat and electric motor, also my fishing equipment. I'm ready for another season of putting meat on the table and will begin in earnest in another week or two when the water warms a bit more.

I'd cut up seed potatoes early Wednesday morning before breakfast and set them out on the bench in the garden for a couple of hours to scab over.

I'm trying a new (to me) way of growing potatoes this summer. Rather than plant in traditional rows, I utilized eight cloth pots with just a few inches of soil in the bottom and barely covered the eyes. I'll add dirt throughout the summer as the potato plants grow.

Never one to put all my eggs in one basket, or eyes in a pot, I planted about a third of the potato eyes in traditional rows.

I wanted to till the part of the garden that's not in raised beds, but first I needed to utilize the last of the top soil I got last weekend by filling the new pipe planter.

Planting flowers, either wave petunias or impatiens, is going to be challenging, fitting each into a hole just over an inch in diameter.

My garden hoe broke! Most who aren't into digging in the dirt don't realize the value of a good garden hoe, one that has been worn over the years to just the right edge with a wooden handle that has grooves that fit only my hand. Hopefully, my repair job will last another year or two.

It took a while to till that part of the garden that is not in raised beds, basically loosening the soil. I'll go over it two or three times before I begin to plant.

The work day ended by starting the backhoe and loading the old truck with fill. I brought it to the front of the garden and began filling the low places on the other side of the fence. It will take most of the summer to complete that entire area.

Sargie was home early tonight and after a walk around the yard, enjoying the beautiful weather, we had a quiet evening.

I'm not certain what Thursday will bring. Sargie wants me to dig up some root-bound hostas and irises in the front flower bed and plant them elsewhere. I'm not surprised. After all, a man's work is never done.

So are the tales from Pentoga Road...

The new fill connecting the front yard, garden, and area that was cleared last summer.
