The fiddleheads are beginning to sprout.
May 12, 2015 - Tuesday evening
37 degrees/partly cloudy/breezy
Pentoga Road

As witnessed above, this spring's crop of fiddleheads are popping up all over the woods. For those who don't know, fiddleheads are a type of immature fern that when picked before they can unfurl, make a for some good eating. I've always thought of them as the wild northern equivalent of asparagus.

Fiddleheads don't seem to be nearly as popular in the UP as they are in northern Maine. Year's ago, when the boys were young, we gathered them along the stream that ran through our property and in various places along the St. John River, the border between New Brunswick and Maine. I'd not eaten the immature ferns in years until I discovered them growing on our property. They are now included in our early springtime meals.

We decided not to go to Green Bay. Brutus was still wobbly last night and I didn't want to leave him outside all day in the rain and snow. Because of his hips, he's been having a difficult time ducking down to get into his house. Remaining at home was the only option.

I'm happy to say that my best four-legged friend is much better tonight and appears he's turned the corner. I'm giving him pain pills for his bad hips, but I think the infection has left. Once this round of pain leaves his back end, Brutus should be back to his old self. Thanks to those who asked.

Sargie and I did venture into town today to run a few errands. Snow was mixing with rain and it wasn't a very nice day to be out and about.

We cleaned the refrigerator and freezer this afternoon and ended up throwing away some leftovers and meat that had found it's way to the back of the freezer. There were two packages that had expiration dates of 2010. Needless to say, that's all bear food way out in the woods with the trail cam set up to record anything that happens by.

It's to be cold tonight, down into the mid 20's. I brought in the plants from the green house so none would freeze.

Sargie closes Wednesday at the Vision Center. The day is to be sunny with highs in the mid 50's and I'm planning to continue my outside projects.

After all, a man's work is never done.

So are the tales from Pentoga Road...

The refrigerator and freezer are squeaky clean.
