I visited one of my favorite local fishing lakes on Wednesday
May 14, 2015 - Thursday
30 degrees/high clouds/calm winds
Pentoga Road

It appears last night was the last where frost is forecast for the foreseeable future. It's time to start planting garden. No doubt, we'll have some scattered frost for the next three weeks or so and the delicate plants will need to be protected, but it's time.

Frost is coating the greenhouse
The giant pumpkin seed has sprouted in its peat pot and I'll plant it today then surround it with a protective Wall of Water. This is the seed that came from a pumpkin that weighed over 2,000 lbs.

Rain is in the forecast for the next two days beginning this evening. Already, the grass has grown significantly after the rains of several days ago. Dad used to say that a person could water all he wanted, but a real rain was much more beneficial. That's for sure.

I tried going fishing Wednesday morning, but discovered the road was closed a mere mile from the lake. The county maintenance crew was installing a new culvert and I was told the job wouldn't be finished until 1 PM. I found a place to turn the trailer around and came back home.

The next two hours were spent spraying thistles with bleach and water. Supposedly, that will kill the weeds. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. There's a bad infestation of them in one of the back meadows.

The rest of the morning was spent working up a pile of wood that I simply dumped last winter when the snow was deep and the temperatures cold. Knowing it would be much easier to split and store when the weather grew warmer, I'd piled it at the edge of the plowed area behind the sheds.

It was early afternoon and I really wanted to go fishing. Conditions were almost perfect; little wind, sunny skies, moderately warm temperatures. I checked the boat and trailer, hopped in the Blazer, and took off for the lake.

It's still early, but if catching a nice bluegill on my first cast is any indication of how this season is going to be, there should be plenty of meat on the table in the months ahead.

Fishing was okay, not great, but it's still early in the season. I'm already thinking of my next trip... which is any time I want to go. I keep forgetting, I'm retired.

I went over to Iron Mountain last night to meet Sargie and ride home with her. Our evening was quiet and enjoyable and neither of us had any trouble falling asleep last night.

Sargie opens today. I'll ride back with her and while in town, visit Home Depot. There are several boards on the kayak rack that have rotted and need replacing. I'll use all treated lumber when rebuilding this time.

Other than that, I'm going to put some plants in the ground today, sow some seeds, tote that barge, and lift that bale.

After all, a man's work is never done.

So are the tales from Pentoga Road...

The woods are filled with trilliums this time of year.
