Monday signaled the official beginning of the Pentoga Road blueberry season
August 12, 2014 - Tuesday

Pentoga Road

With yesterday's badly needed half inch of rain, the dry spell we've been experiencing for the past couple of weeks has ended, at least temporarily. The rain also gave me a good excuse to be lazy, something I do quite well.

Sargie had to work half a day on Sunday in the Vision Center. Left to my own devices, I manned the backhoe for a couple of hours until Yooper Brother Mark appeared. We spent the rest of the afternoon working on the storage unit and are now ready to put on the 4x8 sheets over the rafters.

You never know who you'll meet when hanging out way up high in the rafters.
I fried bluegill filets for supper Sunday evening with nary a one left over after Sargie and I destroyed the entire platter.

I began Monday with a sunrise picking of blueberries.

Most of the plants are five years old and this is the first year we've had a meaningful harvest, enough to put in the freezer.

I'm amazed at the size, many of the berries bigger than the first joint of my thumb.

The weatherman promised rain for Monday afternoon. I skipped walking or doing any other type of work and went fishing. I hoped the cloudy skies and cooler temperatures might work some type of angling magic... and they did. I caught twenty nice bluegills in less than two hours, got back home, and cleaned the lot before the first drop of rain fell. We'll enjoy yesterday's catch in the near future.

The rain gave me the perfect excuse to be lazy. I worked for a bit on next semester's class, but found my eyes growing heavy. I snoozed a bit, watched a documentary on Netflix, and lazed the entire afternoon away. I remember thinking I should at least go out and start cleaning the barn, but that didn't happen. Hearing the rain pounding on the metal roof made it too easy to remain in my recliner.

Sargie and I spent last evening talking and watching television. She had a good day and opens this morning.

I'm not sure what today will bring. Initially, I was going to take the roll up door back to Menards in Rhinelander and exchange it. Yooper Brother Mark and I found when opening the box on Sunday, there were parts missing. Sargie talked me into waiting until Thursday, her day off. That's probably a wise thing.

I think I'll purchase the roofing for the shed locally later this morning. Otherwise, I'll take my five-mile hike, then work on completing the preparation for next semester's class this afternoon. It's time; but first, a cup of coffee.

After all, a man's work is never done.

So are the tales from Pentoga Road...
