The pond has some new inhabitants! |

I like to see that my love of ice cream genes have been passed on to little Ivy. She gets to enjoy her cone twice, once during the initial lick, and again, when her tongue swipes it off her face.
Though the temperature is still warm, I can feel fall in the air. Suddenly, heavy dew is covering everything in the early morning hours. The asparagus fronds are particularly striking.
Tuesday began by transferring the goldfish from the pea soup, algae ridden, water in which they've been living, to the new pond.
I couldn't believe all made it through the summer. Sixteen fish went in early this spring, sixteen came out.
I'm fairly certain I could hear them singing as they were released into the new pond.
Only one problem. We have a resident osprey that was quick to notice. He circled overhead for half an hour, screaming at the top of his lungs.
The fish eater even landed in a nearby tree and watched. I guess he decided the effort wasn't worth the wait and eventually flew off. The fish will have to learn to dive for deep water when they see a shadow overhead. Hopefully, they'll be okay until some aquatic plants are added.
Look midway down on the right. The osprey is waiting and planning how to get his talons on a juicy goldfish. |
Most of Tuesday was spent digging the trenches for the footings of the garden house. It was so rocky that I had to change buckets on the backhoe.
The next step was to fill them with gravel. I was exactly one wheelbarrow load short of having enough.
I was hot and sweaty and had thoughts of going to the lake and taking a quick plunge.
Wait a minute, I have a lake in my side yard.
If you think you're going to see some skinny dipping pictures, just keep on having nightmares, but I will say that the water was refreshing. Even lacking two feet of water from being completely filled, I still couldn't touch bottom in the middle and had plenty of room in which to swim.
You've seen the Kevin Costner movie, Dances With Wolves? This was my version of Swimming With Goldfish.
Jambo came along later in the afternoon asking if I wanted to go fishing. Since Sargie was working until late, I readily agreed.
We caught fish, lots of them. Jambo once again displayed his angling prowess with a fly rod and pulled in one crappie after another.
I managed to catch a couple myself and even caught a huge bluegill.
After all, a man's work is never done.
So are the tales from Pentoga Road...
