Overlooking the Brule River Valley by Pentoga Village |
-8 degrees/clear skies/calm winds
Pentoga Road
It's another chilly evening in the north country. Seems as though the temperatures are making large swings daily. Ten to twenty below zero seems to be a normal nightly low, but today's high was twenty above, a thirty-plus degree swing from last night.
Wednesday morning's stroll was a good one. The county truck had recently spread sand and the walking was easy.
The rest of the day was spent in the shop, mostly working on two natural vases.
The first thing was to glue the bark on one, ensuring that it would remain as one piece.
Each limb was clamped making a tight seal.
Next came hollowing out the ends to the depth of three-quarters of an inch using a router .
Each limb is now ready for the flowers.
A bird? Why not! It was time to turn one on the lathe.
The head and body were made separately and will be glued later. As Joanna Gaines says, "It's just a fun little thing."

There were still a couple of hours of daylight left. Since it was such a nice afternoon, I put my boots on and hiked to Pentoga Village and back making a total of eight miles walked on Wednesday.
The sugar maples are beginning to get the look. I'm not sure how to describe it, but with long afternoon shadows and plentiful sunshine, a person just gets a feeling that maple season could be around the corner. Hard telling which corner, but it looks promising.
Realistically, maple season could be a full two months away or possibly a few weeks, but still, the woods are beginning to get the look.
I need to boil some serious sap this spring and plan to hit the ground running when we arrive home from LasVegas the third week of March.
Nieces Marley and Aubrey love their Uncle Tom's syrup and I intend to make them all they want.

Sargie opens this morning. I'll go for my walk then begin painting flowers. With a high of only 14 degrees forecast, I doubt I'll do too much outside. Still, one never knows.
After all, a man's work is never done.
So are the tales from Pentoga Road...
