Grady, Macrea, Mel, and Sargie at The Tavern in Florence, Wisconsin |
November 15, 2017 - Wednesday
34 degrees/light rain/calm winds
Pentoga Road
I expect to start hearing rifle fire at first light. Today's the opening of the 2017 deer season.
The thrill of opening day has long passed for me. I don't know, maybe it's because I enjoyed premiere world-class hunting for so many years in Alaska that tagging a white tail in the UP doesn't seem so thrilling.
If I really want to have great success shooting a deer, caribou, or moose, all I need do is close my eyes and take a stroll down memory lane.
These days, I find that method the easiest and most satisfying.
As is normally the case after Hambone's been with us, I'll skip the dialogue and simply post yesterday's pictures. They tell a fun and simple story.
Raisin Bran and cartoons followed by The Grinch That Stole Christmas. Can life get any better? |
In the end, two pyramids were adorned with Christmas lights, snowballs were thrown, and snow was transported in the back of a big, ol', Tonka truck.
Neighbor Mike happened along with a piece of wood he thought I might like to turn on the lathe. Grady was happy to see his buddy from across the road and it wasn't long before he was sitting with Mike on his four wheeler.
The day was getting on and Grady and Pawpaw were wet and chilled. Well, Pawpaw was, anyway. Grady was impervious to both and would still be out there playing if I hadn't reeled him in. The boy loves being outside.
It was time to bring in wood, take showers, go to town, then meet Mommy and Daddy for the Hambone exchange later in the evening.
Grandma Sargie gave us a hand with the wood. |
We had a delicious meal last night. The food was good, the company even better. I think the burgers are probably the best I've ever eaten and we can hardly wait to take Mom there over the holidays. My mama knows a good burger when she has one.
My personal choice is the jalapeno burger. They top it off with stuffed poppers, peppers and sour cream, then fried onions topping that. Mmmm.
Eating the hamburger was like checking every box in the food pyramid all at once. Anything that tastes that good has to be good for you.
Sargie's back to work today, but is off tomorrow, her last for a long time as she works all weekend and right up to Thanksgiving Day.
Assuming it's not raining too hard, I'll go for my walk this morning then spend the rest of the day in the shop. Thanksgiving and Christmas are coming, the goose is getting fat, or at least I am, and the sawdust will be flying.
After all, a man's work is never done.
