Filled and top dressed with compost, the raised beds are ready for another year of gardening. |
47 degrees/cloudy/rain/calm winds
Pentoga Road
Holy cow, talk about sleep! I didn't get out of bed this morning until 10 AM. TEN AM. I awakened at 7 and lay listening to Sargie's quiet breathing accompanied by the rain hitting the metal roof overhead and the wind blowing. Thunder was booming far off in the distance. I considered getting up to close the bedroom window, but decided leaving our warm bed required too much effort. The next thing I knew, it was 8.
DEFINITELY time to get out of bed. I manned up, trudged to the bathroom, then shuffled back. The wind was still howling and the rain seemed to be falling harder than ever.
Maybe I'd just crawl back between the sheets and snuggle with Sargie for a few more minutes. She's always warm and soft and her hair always smells so good.
Just a quick snuggle while I planned my day and week ahead.
The next thing I heard was the clock in the dining room striking ten. I'd slept the clock around.
If Mom was here, she'd say something about me needing the extra sleep. Maybe I did or maybe, just maybe, it simply felt good to be lazy on a cold and rainy Sunday morning.
I shoveled over four yards of compost and dirt from the trailer yesterday, filling everything from planters to pots to raised beds.
Ice had to be broken that had frozen on the tarp covering the compost. |
The morning was spent adding dirt to the back patio planters, Sargie's pots, the pyramids, and anything else that required good growing medium.
I moved the trailer to the garden area, unhooked it, then made a fast trip to town to pick up several loaves of bread that had been previously ordered.
Once home, it was back to the garden.
All the beds were filled as well as the cloth growing pots.
The compost had to be shoveled through the deer fence and into the wheelbarrow, then pushed through the maze of beds to the desired location.
I have no idea how many trips were made, but I wasn't sad to see the last bed finished.
Rain began falling as I was finishing. There's just enough compost left in the trailer to use for any incidental needs. Sargie usually has a few last minute planters to fill and what isn't needed, will be worked into the ground where the giant pumpkins are grown or the area where potatoes are planted.
The remaining compost was covered top and bottom and protected from the weather. It will be used over the next week or two. |
Last night was spent binge watching Criminal Minds on Netflix while pigging out on pizza. It was the perfect ending to a busy day.
Sargie's off today. Since it'll soon be noon, I doubt too much will be accomplished. It's rainy, cold, and the fire burning in the wood stove feels too good to move far away from.
No doubt we'll go for our usual drive while chomping chicken fingers from the deli and sipping Cokes, then after, who knows. I'm thinking a Sunday afternoon grandpa nap might be on my agenda. You know, charge up the batteries for a busy week ahead.
After all, a man's work is never done.
So are the tales from Pentoga Road...
