Following the seven-inch rain, after three weeks, Lake Pentoga still covers much of our property.

Pentoga Road

It looks as though another nice day is in store and for once, Sargie doesn't have to work so she can enjoy it. These days of late Indian Summer are absolutely beautiful, just gorgeous.

After my walk on Friday, I played in the garden. The tomato cages needed to be stacked, a couple of tarps folded, a forgotten trowel cleaned, oiled, and hung in the green house.

I was feeling quite proud of myself when I remembered there were four pots of potatoes that still needed harvesting.

The cloth pots are tilted on their sides allowing the soil to spill onto a large scoop. After the potatoes are gathered, I simply dump the dirt back into the pot.
Despite the less than stellar results with the rest of this past summer's garden, the spuds did quite well. Between squash and potatoes, we won't starve.

It was time to empty the burning barrel. Since we are careful to put only combustable items into the barrel, the ashes are just that, ashes, with no metal or plastics.

I took the barrel to the hole I'd previously dug using the back hoe and emptied its contents.

It was a beautiful day, time to take a walk around the property.

I didn't get far. Seems Lake Pentoga still stretches far and wide. It has gone down somewhat, but there's still a lot of water sitting on top of the ground.

Next on the list was to plant the rooted petunia cuttings into a tray filled with wet Vermiculite. As I mentioned earlier, the double ruffled petunias that we love so much are quite expensive. I think I paid almost $6 for a small pack of thirty seeds and only a fourth to half of those germinated. Hopefully we can overwinter these cuttings and save a lot of work (and expense) next spring.

It's time to get the squash and potatoes out of the barn and down the basement for winter storage. I needed some boxes so I called Yooper Brother Mark and he thought there might be some that hadn't yet been crushed at the plant. I made a flying trip to town to retrieve those.

The halogen lights and stand I ordered last week on clearance arrived on Friday. Time was spent assembling those. One thing is certain, at 500 watts per light, one thousand total, unless I'm using them, I won't be leaving those lights on.

We met Sheri and Mark for supper last night to enjoy an all-you-can-eat fried fish meal. As always, the food was good, the company better.

Sargie's off this weekend. The annual Bras for a Cause banquet and auction kicks off this evening in Iron Mountain. Sargie will be attending. Between now and then, I'll let her call the shots as long as they have to do with being outside. It's going to be too nice of a day to stay in.

Time to pour another cup of coffee and watch the sun come up.

After all, a man's work is never done.

So are the tales from Pentoga Road...
