The first fish of the season, a chunky smallmouth bass.

Wednesday was a full day. I was on Lake Mary, a nearby beautiful body of water, shortly after 8 AM. Conditions were perfect. There was a slight breeze and temperatures were warm. All I needed was the fish.

What fish? Other than the bass above and a couple of small bluegills, my attempts at putting meat on the table were for naught. I found other fishermen were having the same luck, so that made me feel somewhat better. You know, misery loves company and all that stuff.

I was home shortly before noon and spent over an hour putting away the frost blankets and styrofoam cups that had been used to protect the plants from Monday night's freezing temperatures.

Every single cup was used, plus a dozen ice cream pails to ensure none of the delicate plants were frozen.

The rest of the afternoon was spent mowing. The trails and meadows are cut and hopefully, won't need to be mowed again for another ten days to two weeks. I've noticed that despite all the rain, the grass is beginning to grow a bit slower.

The early evening hours were spent trimming and making everything look nice. I was happy when I finally put the push mower in the barn knowing the job was finished, at least for this week.

Sargie was home around 7. After a quick supper, we spent the evening cleaning. I did the floors and stairs, Sargie tackled the more difficult tasks, scrubbing and dusting. She also did a couple of loads of laundry.

Thankfully, Sargie's off for the next two days. Sister-in-law, Nancy, is coming over this morning so I can work on her computer. She downloaded an update to Windows 10 and lost her wireless connection. I think ( I HOPE) all that needs to be done is to update new drivers for the operating system. If not, we'll punt.

Sargie and I still hope to go fishing at some point, if not today, then Saturday. In fact, I may go in a little bit, just for an hour or two, a scouting expedition, until it's time for Nancy to arrive. I'm perfectly capable of multitasking. In fact, I'm used to it.

My good buddy, John, sent this picture from Sitka of a giant cabbage plant grown from seed I sent to him earlier this year. As I told him, at least I feel as though some part of me is still in Alaska. The seed is from a large strain I've been developing and is a horticultural work in progress.
After all, a man's work is never done.

So are the tales from Pentoga Road...
