Sargie and Nancy getting ready to do a bit of sight seeing and shopping.

Pentoga Road

Whew, we dodged a fairly good-sized bullet Friday afternoon. Sargie and Nancy had gone to town and I was working in the shop when I received notice that a tornado watch along with severe thunderstorm warnings had been issued. I immediately called the girls and told them it might be good for them to come back home.

Yooper Brother Mark also called and later sent me the picture below. Since they are west of us, the storm hit their place first. Mark was outside washing their camper when it all let loose.

The ladies made it home in good shape and since Nancy had to drive an hour to east, lost no time in saying goodbye. She barely beat the storm home.

Friday started out gorgeous. I was on the lake fairly early and had a lot of fun.

The first four fish I caught were each of a different species.

I wish I could catch a couple dozen perch this size
A baby northern even decided to attack my bluegill-sized lure.

In the end, I brought several fish home and hopefully, Sargie and I will catch enough to make a meal later today.

I was sitting on the lake, pondering the secrets of the universe and thinking deep thoughts when this loon popped up alongside the boat.

He stayed within two or three feet, long enough that I could take several pictures. Had I just landed a small fish, I believe he'd have let me hand feed him.

Nancy arrived at midmorning with computer in tow. Windows 10 was doing an automatic update to her laptop causing it to lose the wireless connection. I suspected it was outdated drivers.

Nancy's reading directions from my computer. In the end, I hardwired her machine directly to our internet and downloaded what was needed.

The sisters decided to go sight seeing and do a bit of shopping.

Checking it once, then twice, and finally, on their way out the door.
I opted to stay home and work on the garden arbor. My first order of business was to connect the two halves of the second arch. I had to cut both down to fit the arbor, but in the end, they were glued and screwed and set aside to dry. I'll sand and paint them today.

The next two hours were spent trying to calculate the angle and design of the top rail to the side lattice that will go from the arbor to the deer fence.

Not only are there angles involved, but there's a gentle arching slope to the piece.

After cutting the side angles, I decided to use a rope as a pattern for my sweeping rail, trace it and cut it three-and-a-half inches wide.

It worked, but there's a lot of sanding to do before using the first as a pattern for the opposite side on the arbor.

The ladies arrived home, Nancy hurriedly took off for Milligan Mountain, and the storm hit with a fury.

My fish/vegetable cleaning table was blown across the garden.
This ninety-five year old house was moaning and groaning and we were seconds from going to the basement before the winds subsided.

I awakened this morning to find the top of a fairly large spruce tree had broken off and landed on the deer fence.

I'll use the front end loader to remove it and will repair any damage before day's end.

This used to be a fairly tall tree. Now it's a spruce bush. Naturally, I cut down the other two that were growing alongside earlier this spring as the three were too crowded.  This one was, by far, the best looking. That's why I kept it.

Yooper Brother Mark had asked if we wanted to meet for our usual Friday night fish fry. We had the best food and conversation and sat at the table for sometime after just talking. Jerad later came along and as always it was good to see our young friend. A volunteer fireman, he'd been out on a call. A large tree had snapped and fallen onto some power lines in Caspian.

The sun was getting low in the sky and everything looked so pristine following the storm and rain. We took our time coming home and Sargie snapped a few pictures.

A field of nothing but daisies

Since all she had was the camera on the iPhone, we decided to return later today with a good camera to take some pictures.

Sargie's off today. We've talked about going fishing if the wind doesn't pick up too much. I've got the top of the spruce tree to remove from the deer fence, but otherwise, it's Sargie's call.

Meanwhile, I'm going to head out to the shop and begin sanding that top rail for the side lattice, listen to the news, and think deep thoughts.

After all, a man's work is never done.

So are the tales from Pentoga Road...
