31 degrees/cloudy/calm
Pentoga Road
Whew, I just looked at the weather and found that Saturday's high is forecast to reach 67 degrees. Talk about getting itchy to plant something or the other. With the ground still frozen, I'd have to use an electric drill to poke a hole in the dirt in which to plant a pea seed or some other early season vegetable. That's not going to happen, but a guy can dream.
Road limits are now in effect until all frost is out of the ground and it dries. Sometimes, limits remain until the middle of June. |
Speaking of planting, the gardening season has now officially started. I spent several hours Wednesday constructing both indoor greenhouses used to germinate flower and vegetable seeds.
Yesterday's first planting? Petunias. Double ruffle, purple and pink petunias; three packages containing thirty-five seeds per package.
You'd think a person would need a lot of space to germinate that many flowers, but petunia seed is small... teeny... almost insignificant.
I had to use the magnifiers, bright lights, and tweezers, and I'm still not certain I got the seeds where I wanted them. The next two weeks will tell.
With a heating mat under the germination tray and plastic wrap stretched over to keep the moisture in, the seeds were set in one of the two greenhouses.
Sargie loves me the most when I clutter up her living room with gardening goodies.
I talked with Sargie mid afternoon and she asked if I'd come over to Iron Mountain and take her car for an oil change. Naturally, being the kind and considerate person I am, I agreed. Well, there's that, plus, I hadn't told her I'd taken over the living room with both greenhouses. I figured I needed to garner all the brownie points possible.
The trip to Iron Mountain and consequent oil change was uneventful. Sargie left work on time and we had a pleasant trip home together.
I'll be going back to Iron Mountain this morning to get the Blazer, but first, I want to make a stop at Home Depot. Otherwise, I hope to finish the planters today, install the solar lights, and get those ready for delivery.
It's time to move along. I might sharpen a drill bit or two... you know, just in case I get the urge to drill a hole in the frozen dirt to plant a pea seed or some other early season vegetable.
After all, a man's work is never done.
So are the tales from Pentoga Road...
