30 degrees/snow flurries/windy
Pentoga Road
They said it was going to happen and sure enough, it did. I just got in from outside after driving through six or eight inches of very wet and heavy snow up to the main highway. I wanted to be sure it was safe for Sargie to drive to work.
It wasn't horrible; barely frozen water just waiting for the mercury in the thermometer to climb another degree or two so it can melt. It's a typical late spring snowstorm. What's funny is that today's highs are forecast to be in the 40's with those in the 60's on Sunday. Much to her relief, or disappointment, Sargie will be heading in to work today. I had the fleeting hope that she might have a snow day and be able to stay at home. Doesn't appear that will happen.
Thursday was a wet and rainy day. In fact, I haven't checked how much precipitation we've received in the past 36 hours, but guessing... I'm thinking an inch-and-a-half, possibly more. I know the snow is heavy in water content and it rained hard the night before last, all day yesterday, and particularly hard last night. It even appears Lake Pentoga is beginning to fill.
I drove home from Iron Mountain after making a stop at Home Depot in hopes of finding a half dozen straight two by fours. My search was in vane. After twenty minutes of searching through a huge pile, I found two, exactly two sticks of wood that didn't have a curve in them. I ended up talking to a person who was higher up the food chain in the store, asking why he would attempt to sell me something that I could never use to build with. I even asked him to find me a half dozen decent sticks of lumber. He couldn't. I left with two 2x4's. When it comes to milled lumber, quality and pride in today's workmanship, even that made in the good ol' USA, seems to be a thing of the past.
The freezing rain that clung to the bushes on Thursday morning made everything seem magical. Thankfully, the roads were warm enough that the water remained in liquid form. |
Thursday afternoon was split between my recliner and the shop. I would work outside for a bit, then get cold and come back inside and grade papers... or once, I might have closed my eyes while thinking deep thoughts. It wasn't too stressful.

Check out that clean work bench. It will stay that way until the first time I need to use it to do some real work. |
I ordered tires for the red four-wheeler last night. Those for the small blue one will be purchased today.
Sargie's back to work today. Mine will be an inside day. I have several honey-do chores that have been ignored and there's a pile of assignments waiting in my in-box. I'll keep busy.
After all, a man's work is never done.
So are the tales from Pentoga Road...
