Twitching a birch log out of the woods
October 8, 2014 - Tuesday

Pentoga Road

It seems strange to be sitting here this morning. Usually when we fly, we're booked on the early flight out of Iron Mountain. Today's airplane ride to Maine doesn't leave until almost 1 PM. At least I don't have to overnight in an airport. I'm due to arrive in Portland, Maine, at 10:30 PM.

Monday was a very busy day. After fixing a pot roast and digging potatoes to go with, plus onions, and carrots, and getting all that put in the slow cooker, I busied myself by carrying some of the items we have for sale from the garage to the storage unit. Others were moved along the walls in the garage, and the rest was taken to the thrift shop. Sargie's been parking her car outside this past week and with Monday morning's move, she can now pull inside and put down the overhead door.

Back from town, I spent the rest of the day twitching a birch log out of the woods, dragging it up to the side yard, cutting and working it up. It's but one limb of several.

The chunks have been split and carried into the wood shed. The tree was half of a large one Andy cut down last fall while he was here.

We got the first half worked up but the other has been lying in the woods for a full year. It's dry and will supply us with some good heat this coming winter.

I drove to Iron Mountain late in the afternoon to meet Sargie and ride home with her. Since we leave at the same time tomorrow (she works late) we figured I might as well drive over and we could have that much more time together on Monday's drive home and Tuesday morning before we part for a week.

I spent some of this evening washing the tomato seeds that have been fermenting. They are now labeled and spread on wax paper to dry before they are put in an envelop to be planted early next spring.

Hopefully my flights will be on time later today. I guess it doesn't really matter. I'm retired and time is one thing I have plenty of.

I'm going to miss Sargie and Brutus. My pup already knows something is going on. He's been stuck to me all day and is hesitant to leave my side.

It's time to finish packing and get this show on the road. But first, I'm going to enjoy a cup of coffee and think deep thoughts.

After all, a man's work is never done.

So are the tales from Pentoga Road...
