April 20, 2014 – Easter Sunday
40 degrees/clouds – fog/calm winds
Pentoga Road
After writing, then walking my usual five miles on Saturday
morning, I returned to empty sap bags. The sun was warm and I’ve never seen sap
flow so quickly. Some resembled a trickle of water coming from a faucet. In
fact, I emptied the north section twice, knowing I wouldn’t get the chance
until late afternoon. I hoped to lessen the chances that the bags would
overflow.
We arrived in Groveland Mines shortly after noon. The house quickly filled with lots of happy people, great conversation, and the very best
of food.
Unfortunately, I ate entirely too much. The ham was out of this world. Along with ladles of ham
gravy over mountains of mashed potatoes, veggies, salad, and other goodies too
numerous to mention, I sat back in a corner, often talking with brother-in-law,
Ross, playing with niece Brielle, and eating.

Sargie and I arrived back on Pentoga Road well before dark.
She helped me gather sap and it took both of us almost an hour-and-a-half to
empty the bags. We filled all four barrels and I’ll have to begin boiling
today. I’m out of storage room.
As usual, Sargie cleaned my clock playing Rummy last night.
It seems I’m always fast out of the gates, but by mid game, she pulls even, and
in the end, the girl is racing away and out of sight.

I’m going for my morning walk as soon as this is uploaded.
After, I’ll alternate boiling syrup and grading finals today. I think I’ll take
the laptop out to the barn so I can sit outside to do my schoolwork and boil.
With a forecast of 65 degrees accompanied by sunshine, it’s going to be too
nice of a day to waste it inside.
May you all have a wonderful and joyous Easter. Indeed, this
most holy of days, concluding the holiest of weeks, should be a happy one, for
He has risen to save us all.
So are the tales from Pentoga Road…
