Off to school on Tuesday morning! |
October 15, 2013 – Tuesday
61 degrees/cloudy/calm
North Waterboro, Maine
I meant to get something written and uploaded this morning,
but I ran out of time. Monday is the weekly deadline for my students to turn in
their weekly assignments. Usually, the early birds get their's in the week
before, a few more a day or two early, and the rest, sometime before Monday ends.
Most of my class waited until the last minute this week. That translated into
many papers needing to be read and assessed. I’m caught up as of now.
The river that flows through Luke and Melinda's back yard |
Monday was a fun one. Luke had to work a twenty-four hour
shift, which left Melinda, the munchkins, and me, to our own devices. I did university
work off and on but the high point of the day was a hike we took through the
local woods. At one point, my faithful guides became somewhat confused.
That's one big squirrel |
It was Grandpa to the rescue. I don’t go anywhere without my
GPS anymore. All those trees tend to look the same. After a quick check, we hiked
on to a local dirt road and walked back home.
I purchased pizzas, brownie mixes, and a gallon of ice
cream, so we could practice for Wednesday night’s birthday party. Although I
think we’re going to have tacos tomorrow night rather than pizzas, we’re in
great shape to eat more brownies and ice cream!
Getting ready for deer season... in a few years |
Yesterday concluded by watching Dancing With the Stars. The
day seemed to fly by.
Luke was home early this morning after working a twenty-four
hour shift. With Melinda gone to work and seeing the kids to school, Luke and I
hopped in his truck and drove to check some beaver traps set for one of the
local municipalities. All were empty.
Luke took me around the area where we did a bit of sight
seeing and lots of talking.
We were back on the road this afternoon to purchase chicken
feed and dog food. We visited one place that had pen after pen of adult
chickens for sale. We came home with a rooster that the owner simply gave us.
Luke winterized his camper this afternoon. We also started
my old snowmobile, the Tundra, that I purchased many years ago.
Luke has kept
it running and true to nature, it cranked right off this afternoon and I took
it for a spin across the yard.
We walked a few hundred yards to the corner and met the kids
as they got off the bus. Both were filled with stories of the day and eager to
get outside and play.
Luke's traps are dyed, boiled, and waxed, and ready for trapping season that begins next week. |
We are having chicken thighs in the smoker and on the grill
for supper. No one is going to go hungry tonight, of that I’m certain.
Tomorrow should see us going birthday present shopping for
our big party tomorrow night. Since I can’t seem to remember anyone’s birthday
during the year, we’re going to celebrate everyone’s special day all at once,
complete with a cake, ice cream, and presents.
Coleman's showing Grandpa how his daddy's live traps work |
It’s time to get this uploaded. After all, a man’s work is
never done.
So are the tales from Pentoga Road…
