March 20, 2013 – Wednesday
5 degrees/calm/partly cloudy
Pentoga Road
It’s a short one this morning. I drove over to the Vision
Center Tuesday afternoon so I could ride back with Sargie after work. I’ll go
back over with her this morning and come home.
The weather remains in the news. After receiving another
several inches of snow on Monday night, the winds rose and howled yesterday.
It’s reported that some gusts were over 30 mph and for a while, our road was
drifted completely over yesterday. I heard the plow truck go by around
mid-afternoon.
Walking on Tuesday was a chilly experience. It was one of
the few times I was happy to be finished and get back home. Usually (and often)
I intentionally walk past the house at the end to add an extra mile
or two. That wasn’t the case yesterday!
Cleaning the drive was almost futile. I had the
chute of the snow blower aimed low as I attempted to throw the snow in a
straight direction rather than have the wind pick it up and blow it back in my face. The drive and other areas were
eventually cleared… sort of.
The rest of the day was spent sitting alongside the
woodstove grading assignments. A few final projects are beginning to come in
and a graduate student even submitted his final unit plan. I hope everyone else does as well. For all intents and purposes, he’s finished for the semester.
I arrived in Iron Mountain well before dark. It was fun
sitting in the Vision Center and watching Sargie at work. She’s good at what
she does and I enjoyed watching her ply
her craft.
The ride home was filled with the usual talking and catching
up on the day. Since it was almost 9:30 before we arrived, our evening was
short.
Today… I’ll go back over to Iron Mountain with Sargie and
drive back home. After that? No doubt, there’ll be a walk and HOPEFULLY, I’ll
get in the barn and work on the greenhouse. The winds are supposed to subside,
although the temperature is only to be in the lower twenties.
I have to laugh. I was talking to a tried and true Yooper
last night who was complaining about the weather. I replied that I was tired of
winter and ready for spring.
He took a step back and said, “Well, there, ya know, I don’
feel so badly now about complainin’. If a guy from ‘Laska is tired of the
winter then I know it must be bad.”
So there you have it.
Time to get this uploaded and start the day. A man’s work is
never done.
So are the tales from Pentoga Road…
