Andy and Mollie
March 2, 2013 – Saturday morning
38 degrees/clear/calm
Leesville, Louisiana

Howdy, y’all, from south of the Mason/Dixon Line. As I look at the current temperature online, I notice it is only 8 degrees on Pentoga Road this morning with a low of -4 promised for tonight. The forecast high for this area on Monday is 75 degrees and sunny. It’s tough, but someone has to enjoy spring time temperatures.

The pear tree in the back yard is in full blossom
Hibiscus in bloom
The azaleas are just beginning to blossom
We arrived in great shape on Thursday. Both our flights were early, the planes were only partially full, and we had a comfortable layover in Minneapolis. Andy was at the airport in Houston to meet us and so far, everything’s been as close to perfect as possible.

The Rhinelander, Wisconsin, Airport where we departed. It was cold and windy.
There was an impressive display of icicles hanging from the terminal in Rhinelander
Sargie clearing security. She'd forgotten to take off her watch and made the scanner light up like a Christmas tree.

Who's happy to be heading south for a week?
Even at 30,000 feet, I couldn't escape Sargie's rummy-playing ways. Failing to find any paper, we used a barf bag on which to keep score. Her's is on the left. As usual, she won.
Coming into Houston, Texas, on Thursday night
It was so good to see my daughter-in-law, Mollie. She’s a little cutie pie and has been scurrying around making sure our stay is pleasant and comfortable. I think Mollie’s whole goal in life is to make sure her father-in-law leaves with an added hundred pounds of belly muscle. The girl served homemade waffles, bacon, and sausage Friday morning for breakfast, then for last night’s meal, made the best shrimp Alfredo I’ve ever eaten. I enjoyed a huge plate full, then went back and got another. What a treat.

We took a drive on Friday afternoon and saw some of the local area. It’s amazing how many pine forests there are in the area along with some huge lakes. I can see where it could easily be a fisherman’s paradise as evidenced by one sign on a local lake. You’ll notice it says the limit for catfish is 100 per day, but only 25 can be undersized. I'd like to return in the fall to go fishing for a few days.

The girls are having manicures and pedicures today. Sargie’s never had either and I think she’s a bit nervous. I told her to enjoy being pampered and babied a bit. She certainly has worked hard enough to earn it.

I think Andy and I will skip the nail pampering and hang out around the house. We have no problem finding things to talk about and simply enjoy each other’s company.

Luke has started tapping trees in southern Maine and sent these pictures yesterday. He's boiling atop a wood stove we had in an old chicken coop we remade into a mini-camp/playhouse at our home in northern Maine years ago. After seeing Luke's and Josh's pictures, I'm eager to begin tapping trees on Pentoga Road in another week or two.

That syrup is the product of an entire day of boiling sap. Grade A amber; the best!
I’m not sure what all is on the agenda for the next couple of days. I’ve heard we might go to a movie later, visit an old plantation house, and sight see more around southern Louisiana. Monday, we’ll get up early and head to New Orleans for a couple of days where it’s to be 70 degrees and sunny. Perfect.

Time to upload the log then get another cup of coffee and pet Tony the cat. The big ol’ washrag of a feline has been begging for some attention. A man’s work is never done.

So are the tales from Pentoga Road by way of Leesville, Louisiana…
