Friday was a fun day. The morning was spent working on my
new class delivery via audio files. I’ve found the easiest way for me to record
my voice to upload is simply by using the feature that comes standard on my
iPhone4. I experimented with it for quite some time and it compresses several
minutes of audio down to a very manageable size.
My friend, John, and his brother, Pete, arrived shortly
before noon. I can’t believe I let them get away without taking any pictures,
but we were so busy talking, laughing, and catching up on news, that it never
occurred to me.
We walked some of the property and I showed both the work
I’ve been doing. John holds a Master Gardener’s Certificate, so we spent some time
in the orchard and garden area. I showed him the various trees I’ve worked on,
grafted, and shared some of my plans for the future.
We enjoyed Sargie’s meat pie for lunch. Sargie made two last
month and put one in the freezer so it only needed to be placed in the oven to
bake. When we were finished eating, one small piece remained.
The guys had a goodly drive back to Chilton, Wisconsin, and
left around 3:30. I rode with them to Iron Mountain so I might ride back home
with Sargie and keep her company. Thanks, John and Pete, for coming to visit. I
hope you’ll come again.
While at the Vision Center, I met Sargie’s good friend,
Margot. She and Sargie have been buddies for a long time and I’ve heard many
stories concerning the past adventures of Sargie and Margot! Margot’s a writer and
has had several published works. Judging by the few short minutes we visited, I
have a feeling we could have talked for much longer. As I told her, it’s nice
to finally put a face to the name.
I had my second helping of pie last night; not that of meat,
but the humble variety, as Sargie took me to the cleaners while playing Rummy. The
girl’s a Yooper card shark masquerading as an optician. Don’t let the clothes
fool you.
We don’t watch a lot of television and a card game lasts
only half an hour to an hour. It’s our way of sitting across from each other
and talking, often catching up on the day’s activities or sharing news.
Usually, we end up laughing more than anything else.
I once had a brother in law who started each day with a game
of cribbage surrounded by three of his closest friends. It gave them an excuse
to talk and communicate, to enjoy each other’s company, usually uninterrupted,
before starting the activities of life for the upcoming day. I guess we use our
Rummy game in the same manner. There’re no interruptions, no television to draw
our attention away from each other, just the shuffling of cards and the person
whom we’re sitting across from.
I see there’s a winter weather statement published for
Sunday and Monday with several inches of snow forecast to fall over the Upper
Peninsula. It’s time.
Today’s forecast is more favorable. I want to take my walk
early then work in the shop, possibly getting the snowmobile started and ready for
this upcoming season. I also need to start the ice auger in anticipation of
ice fishing.
There are never enough hours in the day. Why? Because a
man’s work is never done.
So are the tales from Pentoga Road…
