December 12, 2012 – Wednesday

Pentoga Road
The date is 12/12/12, the last time the month/day/year can
all be the same in this lifetime and beyond. No doubt the Mayans had something
to say about that. I’m looking forward to the 21st so we can awaken
on the 22nd to find the world still intact.
Tuesday was pretty typical. I had to go to Iron Mountain for
an errand or two and returned home by noon. Thankfully, traffic was light, the
roads were good, and I appreciated the cloudy skies. It makes it easier on the
eyes.
I enjoyed my walk after, but stepping from the shelter of the drive, I returned to put on a fleece top. The wind was
blowing and with the temperature registering twenty, I was cold. The fleece did
the trick.
I decided it was time to start the ice auger. It was a
pleasant surprise when it roared to life after four or five pulls. The auger is ready
to go! I later put new line on my ice fishing reel. It, too, is poised to be used for putting meat on the table.
I also took the snowmobile for a ride up and down the path a
couple of times. We don’t have enough snow to really ride, but I wanted to get
fresh gas pouring through the carburetor. It too is ready for another season of
use.
The times between other activities were spent in front of
the computer answering students’ questions about the final, grading final
projects, and putting out small fires. Reality has hit home for many and it’s
probably a good thing that I’m not teaching face-to-face. My patience aren’t as
good as they once were.
We leave for Green Bay on Thursday morning to celebrate
Sargie’s birthday and Christmas shop. If it’s not purchased in the next two
days, chances are, it won’t make the gift list this year. We’ll leave fairly
early in the morning so we can put in a full day. I imagine it will be the same
drill on Friday before returning home. Hopefully, there will be a bench in the
mall from which I might people-watch when my legs finally wear out.
I’m a shopping wimp. Sargie? The girl could win the Boston
Marathon when it comes to perusing the clearance and bargain tables. She’ll get
her chance during the next two days.
Today will be a busy one. Of course, there’s always schoolwork
and I also need to go to town. There’s the five miles to hike and I need to do
some cleaning and laundry. There’s seldom a dull moment. A man’s work is never
done, you know.
And so are the tales from Pentoga Road…
