November 8, 2012 – Thursday
34 degrees
Overcast with a hint of sun… somewhere
Lord knows, we’re ready for some sunshine. I wish it would either rain or be
sunny, but this in-between, drippy, misty, foggy, snowy, rainy, stuff we’ve been enduring day
after day is getting old.
There’s nothing more miserable than cold accompanied by high
humidity. I was always colder in SE Alaska than the Arctic. Oh well, remind me
next summer when I’m complaining about the heat and wishing it would rain.
Wednesday began with my five-mile walk. I was working on
classes when the internet disappeared and figured it would be better to walk
rather than throw a hissy fit. Sure enough, when I returned, the net was
working well and hasn’t quit since.
Since I was already sweating from the walk, I decided to
return to the popple stand and continue to cut and chip trees. For the next
four hours I did just that. I’m well beyond the burn pile now and nearing the
back of the area on the south side. I give the description for anyone who has
been here to visit. I’m almost to the small clearing/meadow on the left.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been so excited about a
project, especially one that costs little other than my time and labor… and
let’s face it, neither of those are worth much. I envision a park-like setting
complete with a gazebo, a small pond and water falls/fountain, a couple of park
benches, and towards the back, a fire ring and picnic shelter.
I came in shortly before dark, showered, then read
assignments. It’s difficult to believe that this semester is winding down so
quickly. In four months, I’ll be preparing for maple sugar season and after
that, it will be time to turn my thoughts to the garden again. In the meantime,
I hope to build a greenhouse and potting shed. There’re simply not enough hours
in the day.
I threw some brats on the grill last night for supper. They
taste as good in the late fall as they do on the Fourth of July.
Sargie didn’t get home until late last night, but
thankfully, has the day off as well as this coming weekend. Sometime, we’re
going to drive the Man Truck over to the storage unit and get the upright
freezer. The one in the basement is stuffed with garden veggies and goodies
Sargie prepared last summer for this winter. I’m going to sell the spare refrigerator in the garage and replace
it with the freezer.
Today… I need to shovel yesterday’s wood chips from the Man
Truck. Once again, it’s sitting on the back axle with the headlights pointing
towards the heavens. Sargie has some errands to run in town and I need to work
on my classes. No doubt, it will be a busy one.
So are the tales from Pentoga Road…
