Sargie and I are hauling a wagon load of pumpkins for the deer

November 10, 2020 - Tuesday morning
37 degrees/cloudy/rainy/calm winds
Pentoga Road

Whew! Talk about rain and wind. We got plenty, enough that it caused me to lay in bed and listen to both several times during the night.

Looking at the radar, it doesn't appear anything is going to change in the near future. To put the icing on the cake, snow is forecast towards the end of the day.

Yesterday's walk was like slogging through a room filled with hot, wet, washcloths. With the humidity approaching 100%, my t shirt was soaked completely through by the time I arrived back home.

Sargie was still in the shower, so I headed to the shop to finish the ring bowl, the one I've been working on for the past couple of weeks.

I should have remained in the house and checked my email.

You might recall the bowl was long and narrow, too narrow to get my hand down inside to sand. So, I cut it apart, sanded the bottom and walls, then glued and clamped it back together. That's when I should have stopped.

All exterior sanding was finished yesterday morning and I was ready to apply the first of many coats of finish. There was just one little bump inside, a speck, really. It was nothing to worry about and whoever was the recipient of the bowl would never know it was there...

... but I would.

It just wasn't "good nuff."

Gently placing my chisel inside, I was attempting to turn off the small imperfection when...

Yeah, well, that's the end of that story. When it comes to turning, for me anyway, some days are diamonds, most are coal. Our bin is almost full.

At least we won't be cold this winter.

We made our trip to town, stopping by the dump first, so I could drown my sorrows by taking an occasional sip of Sargie's Coke. My bride pointed out that I still hadn't fixed the passenger side rear view mirror on the Blazer. Broken from the car body long ago, it's been known to occasionally dangle in the wind.

It was Uncle Bobby Love, in Sitka, who helped me perfect the art of reattaching a rearview mirror casing onto an old car. With his assistance, I did the same to the driver's side mirror on the Blazer many years ago. The procedure was performed inside an old airplane hanger.

With epoxy in hand Monday afternoon, a board on which to mix in the other, I combined the mixture of the two tubes and slathered the goop onto the surfaces holding the mirror.

Hmm, how to hold everything in place?

No problem, isn't that why ice chisels were invented? The tool was wedged between the ground and mirror and in a matter of minutes, the epoxy had dried and the mirror back in place.

Can't beat those good, old, Alaskan, repairs!

It was warm and windy when Sargie and I decided that there was no time like the present to put up the outside Christmas lights.

First, we had to get the pumpkins, big and little, out of the way

It didn't seem right to be decorating so early, but my bride was quick to remind me how cold the chore has been in years past.

A winter fleece, camo no less, on top/shorts on the bottom

We plugged each strand in just long enough to ensure all the bulbs worked before pulling the plug.

We'll begin lighting up Pentoga Road after Thanksgiving day.

It was getting later in the afternoon before we finished hanging our lighted holiday decor. After a quick trip to the trail cam to set out the mostly rotten pumpkins, we were happy to retire for the day.

Rain is pounding down outside and since it's still dark, I don't have an overwhelming urge to take a morning walk. It's time to head to the shop and see what damage I can do. There are many puzzles to make for the grandbabies, bowls to turn, a segmented piece to begin, and several scroll saw projects waiting in the wings.

With Sargie's boys and families coming to celebrate Thanksgiving with us on the 20th, I might try to rent the floor sander and get the kitchen floor looking nice.

Where do I begin? So much to do, so little of me.

After all, a man's work is never done.

So are the tales from Pentoga Road...

It was a warm, muggy, walk, Monday morning
