What better way to start a birthday than with pancakes covered with whipped cream and sprinkles!
May 15, 2020 - Friday morning
45 degrees/clear skies/calm winds
Pentoga Road

This morning has all the makings of an early summer day. The skies are clear, the temperature warm, and so far, there's no wind.

Could this a "short day", one where I stow my usual bluejeans in favor of cooler summer wear?

Oh yeah baby, bring 'er awn. After a long winter, these lily white Big Bird legs are ready for some solar lovin'!

Hambone's birthday was a good one.  Grandma Sargie whipped up Hambone's favorite breakfast, pancakes with whipped cream sandwiched between each layer and covered with a liberal amount of sprinkles. GI Joe and the Marines were posted on the perimeter to fight off any bad guys who had thoughts of stealing his breakfast.

With precipitation falling, the morning was spent watching the Disney Network or playing on the computer.

The rain finally quit early in the afternoon and tired of being cooped up in the house, we made our way outside to plant flower bulbs and other goodies.

We have a mixture of dahlia, canna, and large elephant ear hosta bulbs, planted in the terrace alongside the barn with the largest in the rear. Sargie and I, both, agree that it will either be beautiful or a complete bust. Only time will tell.

Creeping phlox were planted in the areas around the terrace. As always, Grady was eager to learn and with Grandma Sargie's help, planted one side.

The boy has quite the interest in gardening so we sent home some onion sets, several strawberry plants, and a bunch of chives. With Mom and Dad's encouragement, Hambone can start his own garden at home. He knows how to plant them and I told him he could teach his mama and daddy the same.

We moved our attentions to the remnants of the ancient apple tree that once reigned over the back yard. It was in poor shape when I bought our home years ago and even after it was completely dead, I salvaged the trunk on which to hang the bird feeder and a bird house. It has served us well.

The old trunk had become shaky in the past few years. The roots had rotted and I noticed late last fall that a stiff breeze could probably blow it over. A gentle push from the old Ford tractor had the same effect.

It's going to seem strange without some part of the old apple tree present in the backyard. Pushing the trunk to the ground felt like I was destroying an old grave marker, something to be respected rather than discarded.

We'll plant flowers there for now and depending on their success, the area may be returned to lawn in the future.

It was time to celebrate Hambone's birthday, but before any party could begin, he had to attend his online class via Zoom.

I have to give his teacher credit. Anyone who would attempt to teach a bunch of EK children, early kindergarten, has more patience than I possess.

The high point was when the class joined in to sing Happy Birthday to Grady.

Mama and Daddy had arrived and class was over. We enjoyed a big supper of Hambone's favorite culinary delights, hot dogs, French fries, and sweet corn, all washed down with A and W Root Beer.

Time to open presents!

Pawpaw's mama didn't have no idiot for a child. The dog and I stayed well out of the way while the Jedi knights battled for supremacy of the living room.

The battle was finally over and the hour growing late. We all joined in singing Happy Birthday and enjoyed cake and ice cream before seeing Hambone, Mama, and Daddy off for home.

Though I'll miss my shadow, there's a reason why God made parents young.

With the next two days forecast for being near perfect, I hope to tackle a large spruce tree out by the road. It has to come down before Larry the Heavy Equipment Guy begins moving rocks and dirt this next month. It's our last big sawing and chipping job for this spring.... I hope.

Spring must be close at hand.
Sargie has her Boston ferns hanging on the front porch.

Time to strap on the hikers and take a stroll to Pentoga Village and back.

After all, a man's work is never done.

So are the tales from Pentoga Road...
