26 degrees/partly cloudy/calm
Pentoga Road
A bit more snow fell overnight. Thankfully, it warmed enough on Thursday to melt most of Wednesday evening's snowfall, but looking at the forecast, there's nothing but snow and snow showers forecast for the next week.
I see my old stomping grounds from my pre-Alaska days, northern Maine, is getting clobbered by a winter storm with up to twelve inches forecast. It will make the snowmobilers happy, but I'm not sure the rest of the populace will be jumping up and down for joy. And the poor munchkins, they don't get out for summer break until mid June as it is, can you imagine adding a dozen snow days at the end? I'm not sure why I think about it. Those days are growing smaller and rapidly diminishing in my rearview mirror.
And while I'm talking about snow and cold, I recently read an article where the intensity of our upcoming winter can be judged by the amount of snow that covers the ground in Siberia during the month of October. Last year, large portions of northern Russia were covered by late fall. Seems it is the same this year, millions of kilometers are buried in the white stuff.
Oh well, we have plenty of wood, most everything is stowed away, and I guess we'll do what the farmers in northern Maine do when it snows; let it snow.
Thursday was spent in the basement cleaning and building a place to hang a grow light so Sargie's ferns and outdoor plants might live to see another summer. I initially turned on the oldies station and found myself bee-bopping around the basement until I banged my head on a low hanging heating duct. After seeing stars, Baby Jesus, and quite possibly, Michael Jackson, I pulled the plug and got down to business.
The light was hung by the stairway with care, in hopes that Sarge's plants would overwinter there.
Never mind. It was a weak attempt at some weaker humor.
At any rate, the basement is coming around. There are still a few mystery boxes hiding here and there along with totes and boxes of Christmas decorations. They need to be sorted, stacked, and arranged in some fashion. I think since most are Sargie's (all in fact) I'll let her do that.
Final projects are beginning to trickle in for my class. I'm grateful for the early ones. It will diminish the pressure of having to read nonstop towards the end of the semester. I graded one yesterday afternoon and have two more to do today.
Sargie had to close last night, but we had a late supper and enjoyed winter squash and grilled brats with sherbet for dessert. I'm fairly sure there are some food groups in there somewhere.
Sargie works early today then will attend the Bras for a Cause benefit in Iron Mountain after. I'm not sure what today holds for me. I'd like to work in the barn, but it's so darn damp. Our current weather reminds me more of Sitka, Alaska, during the winter months than the UP in early November.
There are a couple of outside flower hangers that need to be taken down and stored away. That's one chore that will definitely be done today along with a few others, but none surprise me. After all, a man's work is never done.
So are the tales from Pentoga Road...
See that heating duct in the foreground? It almost laid me out on the floor. No more AC/DC in the basement for me. |
